Extra Inspired - Joanna/Weston
The following post is an extra inspiration by Joanna, inspired by Edward Weston. Deadlines for monthly themes are always due on the 5th and 20th of every month; however, if you would like to submit an extra inspiration you can do so anytime! To read more about the following post please head on over to Joanna's site. There you will be able to see more posts inspired by Weston, more images from the below set, and see these images as she envisioned them. Thanks Joanna!

This month my muse is Edward Weston which is my extra inspiration choice over at ACoLab. The quote Edward made about love being like art I thought was rather profound as I am in love and feel it is something I have attained. I am in love with my husband, son, family and life, yet as we move along in our journey of life together, I think I get what Edward was asking in this question. Will humans ever attain everything they wish to attain from love of life in the time had? A very deep statement which I needed to ponder (as he is my muse for the month), and so I did so with a glass of water - half full or half empty - and then eureka it hit me:

Extra Inspired - Joanna/Atget
An excellent end to the month, Joanna has been inspired by one of this month's Extra Inspirations and created a really beautiful post. Head on over to see her photos as she intended for them to be viewed. Anyone can submit an extra inspiration at any time of the month.
And now, presenting Joanna's photos as inspired by Eugene Atget...

Some scenes are timeless. These ones, to me, hit that statement even though I took them this month!
Fish and Chips with two tartan teuchters and a dog!
Remember I mentioned running out like some crazed woman to get the pictures of the fishmonger and butcher? Well here they are, ta-da! (If you're not sure what I am gibbering on about and want to, click here).
As soon as I saw this scene from the corner of my eye from across the street, I had to get it. To me it was like a scene from "Days of yore" (the olden days) and I thought really interesting (or at least I hoped they would be after it had been developed!). Maybe at the back of my mind was Eugene Atget who is an "extra inspiration" over at ACoLab and he was someone I wanted to pay tribute to because I think his photographs are beautiful and also of days gone by. Maybe it was also because I had gone to see an exhibition on the photographs of August Sandler whose portraits are so memorable and haunting, again of people from days gone by. Either way, I just saw the scene and had to try to capture it.
When the butcher saw I was taking pictures of his neighbour, the fishmonger, he wanted in on the action too!
A girl in the tea room at Anteaques who I photographed when I returned to Anteaques after taking the Fishmonger and Butcher shots to then see this old fashioned looking girl having tea in an old fashioned tea room/antique shop!
The setting of all of these pictures to me reflect a modern take of Eugene Atget who took beautiful images of architectural scenes and of people who he thought had social interest of their time and whilst when I took these I didn't have this challenge of him in my mind, when I was looking at them I thought they would fit this challenge too - hope you see this and don't just think me "demented"
The above were all done on my 1950's Rolleiflex.

Extra Inspired - Joanna/Basquiat
The following was written by Joanna. You can also see this inspired creation on her blog. I love Jean-Michel Basquiat's work, it is fantastic. I always have had a thing for the paintings he produced, so when I saw that this was a February "extra inspiration" over at ACoLab, I thought yey!
Thanks Joanna!! If you would like to submit your own creation inspired by one of the monthly "extra inspirations" please do. Also, feel free to join us for our monthly submissions due on the 5th and 20th of every month. Happy creating!

Below bottom: Homage to Jean-Michel Basquiat; (Portrait of Andy Warhol as a Banana)
This was such a lot of fun doing it that I am going to push myself to see if I can capture some more homages to him and his work as he is my muse for February.

Extra Inspired - Anika/Barnett Newman
When I was a little girl my dad took me to the MOMA in New York. I wanted badly to see the modern art. I didn't know anything behind the work of Mark Rothko, Mondrian, and other abstract expressionists but I loved to look at them. I guess I can somehow get past the thought that it's a simple canvas with lines and squares or blocks of color and just fall in love with the design. I know that the artists have a method and concept behind their work but a lot of times (since I am being honest) it seems to take away the beauty for me. In fact I am more inclined to judge their work if I know that story. I know, that's backwards...but this is one of the things that is so great about art-it's highly subjective and personal to everyone who makes it AND sees it. In fact, when my dad (and keep in mind my dad loved art work and knew a lot about art from different areas of the world. He collected paintings and sculptures from all over the globe) and I entered the area of Rothkos and Newmans my dad took a look around the room, paused, yelled out "Rubbish" and told me he would meet me later. See? Subjective.
The other day while walking around I snapped a photo that reminded me of Barnett Newman's "Black Fire". The lines and space seemed just like it. The scene also reminded me of his Stations of the Cross paintings. For example, this image to the right ,"Station 12". Especially the way the pay draws off the white line. The textures in the cement of the photo I took made me think of this one.
This is the photo I took...inspired by Barnett Newman.
Here's the thing: I love abstract art. But I love it even more when a common thing like the ground I walk on can inspire me or remind me of beautiful art. It's everywhere... I love that.

Extra Inspired - Joanna/Imogen Cunningham
The following is our first "extra credit" inspiration. (Can anyone think of a better name than "extra credit"? Please.) Thanks to Joanna for starting the year off with such a lovely post. Things are a bit reformatted because of the blog size and such. If you would like to see the post as she intended please hop on over to her blog. If you would like to participate in the ACoLab please see our monthly inspirations or the extra inspiration page. Enjoy!
Destination Unknown - inspired by Imogen Cunningham
Imogen Cunnigham was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. She began her photographic studies at the University of Washington and went on to become one of photography's early pioneers and commenced what became one of the longest photographic careers in the history of the medium.
In the 1920's Cunningham turned her attention to artistic nudes of friends and family and the study of plant forms found in her garden. The results are staggering; an amazing body of work comprised of bold, contemporary forms.
(Below Images: "Mother Nature Sees All" and "Tired")

I love the work she did, and because she had various subject matters, I am going to use her as my muse inspiration for this month and try and tackle a number of her subject matters which is going to be hard because she did nudes, plant forms, and portraits and they were incredible.
(To the left: "Ripe")
I don't for one minute think that what I will produce will be as iconic as what she did, what it will do however is provide me with a focus in which to experiment and challenge and educate myself, after all that is what the early pioneers of photography did, and photography to me is my own way of exploring me, what I see, what I want to express and I do love contemporary art a lot!
(Right image: "Soft to the Touch")
This is so exciting, and I hope that you enjoy what to me feels like the start of a journey to Destination Unknown - although maybe for me that will be getting to understand Imogen Cunningham a little more and tackling subjects that I have not!
(Below: "Past it's Prime", " Dangerous", "V is for", "Propaganda")

So firstly, thank you Anika for coming up with such stunning inspirations for 2011, I feel like 2011 is the start of a long journey for me......
